Diagramming oil well sites

Over the weekend, I dove into figuring out a way to understand the spatial implications of two of the major physical manifestations of the oil boom – well sites and man camps.

I looked at the well sites across time.  The diagram below provides an idea of the rhythm of well creation in the bakken:


These diagrams represent the basic stages of well completion.

First, wells need to be graded

Then they get drilled

Next, they get fracked

and finally, resource extraction begins.
